Getting a PSA Test When Diagnosed With ED |
|
ED pumps and penis pumps are the first treatment offered by doctors for those with impotence or erectile dysfunction. The penis pumps and ED pumps are the least invasive and non-medicated treatments available at this time. Erectile dysfunction or Impotence is considered the body’s inability to get and keep an erection for a sustained period of time. It is considered normal for men to experience symptoms of ED 1 time out of every 5 sexual experiences. However, all symptoms should be reported to your doctor, as underlying conditions that cause ED should have treatment. When diagnosis for ED is sought, PSA tests or the prostate-specific antigen test should be requested. The PSA test is a blood test that is done in conjunction with the digital rectal exam for prostate issues. The prostate-specific antigen test can help to detect abnormalities with the prostate gland as well as cancers. The PSA levels can be interfered with by medications such as hormone therapy, therefore all medications and therapies being taken should be disclosed prior to the test being completed. At this time there is no agreed upon normal PSA levels. Your doctor will look at your current medical condition along with your prior medical record to determine if your PSA levels are high or low for your health status. The PSA test results are helpful in detecting cancer, even when no other symptoms such as white blood cell count are seen. However, the test results can vary from lab to lab so if yours are considered high or low you should have the test completed at another lab. PSA results that are lower than 4 have few cases of confirmed cancer, while those above 4 have a higher risk of prostate cancer. For more information on the PSA test, contact your ED doctor. |
