How Your Lifestyle Can Effect Erectile Dysfunction |
|
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for normal intercourse. It can be occasional or chronic (in which case, it is deemed impotence). An erection is obtained through a combination of blood vessel, nerve, and hormonal functions, usually triggered by some form of stimulation to the brain. Normally, once the brain signals arousal, blood flow to the penis becomes more rapid, filling its sponge-like chambers, and culminating in engorgement. Valves in the blood vessels at the base of the penis prevent back flow until satisfaction, or distraction, releases them. There are many things that can cause erectile dysfunction. Most are physical. Many are indirectly related to the lifestyle choices of the individual suffering from Erectile dysfunction. Lifestyle can be defined as the group of behaviors a person adopts which he uses to both affect, and cope with, the world in which he lives. These behaviors encompass a broad spectrum of practices that reflect choices made over time. They may be well-reasoned or simply convenient. However they develop, the behavior a man adopts affects his health in many concrete ways. The use of certain drugs (prescription and/or recreational) can make achieving or maintaining an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse difficult. Smoking and heavy alcohol consumption have also been noted as contributing to Erectile dysfunction. Consumption of unfermented soy products can have an emasculating effect on men due to their estrogen-like constituents. Interestingly, type II diabetes is now recognized as a result of lifestyle choices. Up to sixty percent of diabetic men suffer Erectile dysfunction because of damage done to their cardiovascular, neurological, and hormonal health. All men experience periods in life when stress, worry, or fatigue temporarily overrides their desire for sexual activity, resulting in Erectile dysfunction. The importance of these occasions should not be exaggerated. Impotence is persistent failure to respond to sexual stimulation. Continual stress, worry, and fatigue are lifestyle issues that can disable the workings of the libido. In such cases, choices must be made in order to eliminate the causes. In this case, taking life too seriously leads to Erectile dysfunction. |
