Four Ways To Minimizing Your Risk Of Prostate Cancer

Because researchers have not identified specific causes of prostate cancer, there are no fool-proof prevention methods. However, there are steps you can take to minimize your risk of contracting the disease. Knowing the risk factors is a very important first step in this endeavor.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Science has found over and over again how important it is to eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly. It is good for the heart, the circulatory system, and it can prevent some forms of cancer. A direct correlation has been found between a diet heavy in animal fats and prostate cancer; on the other hand, some studies have indicated that a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and fiber may actually prevent the disease. Studies have also found a link between exercise and an active lifestyle, and prostate cancer. Possibly due to these factors, statistics have identified obese men to be at higher risk for the disease.

Urinary Tract and Reproductive System Care

Long term studies have seen a higher incidence of prostate cancer in men who have had infections and health issues related to the prostate and the surrounding area. Men who have had sexually transmitted diseases and urinary tract infections have been found more likely to contract prostate cancer later in life. Having safe sex and taking proper care of yourself early in life can be an effective prevention of disease later.

Know Your Family History

Heredity plays a large part in determining who will contract prostate cancer. Knowing the incidence of the disease in your familial past can play a large part in early detection and prevention. If your father or grandfather suffered from prostate cancer, be sure your physician is aware of this so he can take the proper steps to screen you for the disease regularly.

Have Regular Screenings

While you may not be able to prevent the contraction of prostate cancer, you can prevent it from advancing. Knowing your risk factors and sharing them with your doctor are key in taking the lead in your own prostate health. Early detection is paramount in treating and conquering the disease, so be sure to be screened regularly, as determined by your physician. Screenings will consist of a digital rectal examination and a blood test. If prostate cancer is detected early, the recovery rate is excellent, partially due to the fact that cancer cells do not develop as rapidly in the prostate as they do in other areas of the body. For this reason, if caught early, your physician will be able to isolate the cancer cells and destroy them before they are able to spread.
