Help for Patients with Erectile Dysfunction |

Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to get and or keep an erection firm and long enough for sexual intercourse. Another word for erectile dysfunction is impotence. Erectile dysfunction can cause problems such as stress, relationship problems and can affect a person’s self-confidence. There may be an underlying health condition causing the Impotence so if a person suffers from Erectile dysfunction, they should see a doctor. Treating an underlying condition may or may not help with the Erectile dysfunction. A doctor will do a physical exam, some blood tests, urine tests, an ultrasound and sometimes an overnight erection test to diagnose a person with Erectile dysfunction. The doctor will usually prescribe oral medications for the person to try first. There are drugs available that will enhance the effects of nitric oxide which produces the relaxation of the muscles of the penis. The medications will cause and increase in blood flow and allow an erection with sexual stimulation. These medications usually will not correct the Erectile dysfunction right away. Sometimes they don’t even work at all. The doctor may experiment with different medications and dosages for awhile. There are also some other options for helping a person with Erectile dysfunction. A penis pump or Erectile dysfunction pump, is a hollow tube that has a pump on it. The tube is placed over the lubricated penis and used to suck air out of the tube and creates a vacuum which pulls blood to the penis. Once an erection occurs, a tension ring is placed around the base of the penis which holds the blood in place and allows for sexual intercourse. This can be uncomfortable, but usually works right away. There are two types of common surgeries some doctors recommend also. There are also penile implants which require surgery to place a device into the two sides of the penis. Another surgery to correct Erectile dysfunction is blood vessel surgery if a blood vessel is leaking and causing the Impotence. There are several options to help a person that had Erectile dysfunction. A person should discuss all options with their doctor to determine what is right for them. |
