The Importance Of PSA Test Results

PSA tests or the prostate-specific antigen test is a recommendation for all men over the age of 50, or a male of any age who has a medical history including prostate cancers or benign tumors. The PSA test or prostate-specific antigen test can help to determine the recurrence of cancers due to the fact that it is used in conjunction with the digital rectal exam. The digital rectal exam is also recommended at least once a year for men over the age of 50 as part of the annual exam. Used together, the PSA and rectal exam will help to determine causes for impotence or erectile dysfunction as well as prostate issues and cancers.

Erectile dysfunction or Impotence is considered the body’s inability to get or keep an erection for a certain period of time. Many men use ED pumps or penis pumps as recommended by a doctor after diagnosis is made. Men who use ED pumps or penis pumps without a diagnosis probably have not had the PSA test. PSA levels that are under 4 mg/mL are traditionally used as the level of cutoff for any concerns of the risk of getting or having prostate cancer, as those men with prostate cancer generally have PSA levels above 4. For men who have a normal rectal exam and PSA levels less than 4, the chance of having cancer is less than 15%. Men with a PSA level between 4 and 10 have more than a 20% chance of having prostate cancer, and men with a PSA higher than 10 has a risk factor of almost 70% of having prostate cancer.

This does not mean that if your PSA level is high, that you will have prostate cancer; it simply means the risk is higher. Paired with a rectal exam, doctors are able to keep an eye on the possibility of cancers.
