What is a PSA Test and Why is it Important for Men?

PSA or prostate-specific antigen test is a test that is done on the cells in the prostate gland that measures the level of PSA in the blood. It is used along with the rectal exam to help find prostate cancer in men older than 50 by the FDA. PSA can be a cause of erectile dysfunction or impotence, and patients who have PSA and find cancer can also use ED pumps or penis pumps as treatment for the ED.

PSA levels are not the only item used to determine prostate conditions including prostatitis or BPH. These conditions are commonly seen in men who later develop prostate cancer found through PSA. PSA is also used to determine recurrences of prostate cancer, as the higher levels of the antigen can mean the cancer has returned. Patients on hormone therapy during cancer can have low PSA levels prior to, during and after treatment so it may not be accurate.

PSA testing is recommended for men who have Erectile dysfunction or Impotence and men who are prescribed penis pumps or ED pumps as treatment. The prostate-specific antigen test can detect the possibility of underlying conditions that are causing these physical problems. Any level found by the PSA to be less than 4 ng/mL is normal, while any below 9.9 and above 4.1 have a higher possibility of prostate cancer. However, of all men who undergo PSA testing, 65-75% does not have prostate cancer.

There are no specific medical normal or abnormal PSA testing levels. Inflammation of the prostate known as prostatitis can cause fluctuations in the PSA level, and the PSA level is also known to vary based on the lab that performs the blood work testing. If you have an elevated PSA level and no cancerous symptoms are seen by the doctor, the PSA tests may be recommended for repeating every few months.
