What Is Advanced Prostate Cancer? |
|
Prostate cancer is a major source of concern for most men over the age of 50, and is particularly prevalent in African-American men. This form of cancer develops relatively slowly, and oftentimes in this slow development stage it is very hard to detect the cancer or for a man to know he has the cancer because it gives no symptoms. Symptoms for prostate cancer show up when the cancer has really reached its advanced stage, and at this point the cancer has potentially spread to other parts of the body such as organs, bones, and other vital tissues. The advanced stage of prostate cancer is incurable, and at this state it’s important to try and suppress the cancer as much as possible as to attempt to slow down the spreading of the cancer to even more parts of the body. There are several stages of prostate cancer, and the first level, level 1 is microscopic and near impossible to detect. The last level 5, is when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, and its spread so much that it’s difficult to tell which parts have cancer and which don’t, making a cure impossible. At this stage is very common for the cancer to have spread to lymph nodes, bones, liver and lungs. Going through extensive testing to determine which state of prostate cancer a man has is important, as each level has specific treatment options that can improve chances of survival for that level. Once the cancer has reached the advanced stages, however, it has been spread to the other parts of the body and usually at that point there is no treatment that can effectively stifle the growth and spread of the prostate cancer. However, there are some treatment options that need to be discussed with a doctor exclusive to this stage of cancer development. |
